Principal’s Welcome: A Shared Journey at Kaipara College

Welcome to Kaipara College. Taking on the leadership of this school is a profound honor; it is a role that involves becoming a guardian of this community’s aspirations for its young people. In many ways, I am beginning this chapter in the same position as our new Year 9 students. We are all starting at Kaipara together—learning the rhythms of the school, meeting new people, and finding our way. This shared experience of being new is both challenging and energizing, and I believe there is something powerful in navigating this transition alongside our students.

My Foundation in Education

My career has been defined by a belief in breaking down barriers. From my time deaning at Avondale College to leading the Science Department at Waitākere College, I have seen firsthand what is possible when a school community works with a shared purpose.

A particular highlight for me was establishing the Māori and Pasifika Medical Science Academy. This initiative aimed to empower our learners to become health professionals who serve their own communities. My decade at Waitākere College, including four years on the senior leadership team, taught me that transformational change doesn't come from the top down—it comes from bringing people together, listening to expertise, and creating space for collaboration. When you invest in relationships first, academic achievement and community engagement naturally follow.

Leadership through Honesty and Connection

I want to be transparent about who I am as a leader. I care deeply about getting things right, which means I take the time to ask questions and understand different viewpoints before deciding on a direction. However, the reality of leadership is that I will get things wrong sometimes.

When I do, I won’t hide from it. I will be upfront, figure out what we can learn, and focus on moving forward. That kind of honesty—even when uncomfortable—is how we build genuine trust. While systems help a school run smoothly, education truly happens in the connections between people: when a teacher knows a student as an individual, and when families and schools communicate openly.

The Distinctive Spirit of Kaipara

What drew me to Kaipara College was the visible "heart" of this place. This school sits in a community that genuinely wraps itself around its young people. The local connections and the pride in what has been built here are things you cannot manufacture.

Our core values—Aroha, Whanaungatanga, Kaitiakitanga, and Angitūtanga—align deeply with my personal philosophy. To me, living these values looks like:

  • Aroha: Treating people with care when things are tough, not just when they are smooth.

  • Whanaungatanga: Being an accessible leader who is present at sports games, events, and in the hallways.

  • Kaitiakitanga: Taking responsibility for our environment, our school, and most importantly, our people.

  • Angitūtanga: Staying relentlessly focused on helping every student reach their potential.

Our Vision Together

I want our students to feel genuinely excited about learning—to discover things that "light them up" and build confidence through real achievement. For this to happen, our staff must also feel supported and valued. When teachers thrive, students thrive.

My vision for Kaipara College is straightforward: I want to focus on relationships and truly knowing this community. Over the coming months, I will be spending a lot of time listening to your stories.

I ask two things of you in return:

  1. Share the wins: When a teacher makes a difference or your child has a breakthrough, tell us. Those stories deserve to be celebrated.

  2. Be honest when things aren't working: Don’t wait and hope a problem gets better. Talk to us—the teachers, the deans, or me. Partnership means being honest with each other, especially when it’s difficult.

I am honored to be here and excited for everything we will accomplish together.
